Goals: Are yours SMART?

When it comes to working out, it is important to have some goals in mind.

This is what will help drive you and motivate you. Heck, it’s probably what got you started in the first place! But how many times did you set that goal and end up giving up on it because you weren’t getting the results that you had hoped for?

It’s okay to be honest with yourself. Most of us have done this.

We live in a society that is fueled by instant gratification, which then makes it difficult to be patient and wait for the things that we want.

As I had mentioned in a blog last week, we are playing the long game when it comes to fitness. It is absolutely great to see quick results with crash diets, but can you make that last? Is this sustainable? Probably not.

This is why you should be setting SMART fitness goals.

SMART is an acronym that is used in the fitness industry to help with setting realistic goals - ones that can be sustained as well as accomplished.

Specific - Your goal should be clear and specific. Otherwise, it may be difficult to truly focus your efforts or feel motivated to achieve it. Ie: I want to workout 30 min each day.

Measurable - Can this goal be measured? Duh, of course. Time yourself silly. Your goal should be measurable so you can track your progress and stay motivated.

Achievable - Your goal also needs to be realistic and attainable to be successful. It should stretch your abilities while also remaining possible. Ie: Will I have time for this? Some days I might not. But I can increase the time I workout on other days to meet my weekly goal.

Relevant - Is it worthwhile? How important is it to you? Hopefully very! Otherwise, why are you doing it?

Time - When do you want to have this goal accomplished? Set a target date so that you have a deadline to focus on and work towards.

Setting SMART goals is something that may not be as easy as you think. Do you have anyone to hold you accountable and stay on track with reaching your goal? Do you know how long it will take to reach it?

These are all questions that you need to ask yourself. This is also where us coaches can help. We can help advise you about whether or not your goal is realistic and help you reach it within an acceptable amount of time.

Let us know what goals you have and how we can help you achieve them! We are more than happy to help!
